We do not collect analytics, telemetry, crash reports, browsing history, page content, or any other personal or usage data.
2. How We Use Your Data
Data is used only as follows:
- Highlights, notes, and settings - used solely to display your highlights and restore them when you revisit a page. This data never leaves your device.
- Pro license key - used solely to verify your subscription status with LemonSqueezy. It is never used for any other purpose.
- Customer name and email - displayed in the extension's settings panel so you can confirm which account is activated. Never used for marketing or any other purpose.
3. Data Storage
All extension data is stored locally on your device using Chrome's chrome.storage.local API. This means:
- Data is stored in your browser's local storage and is accessible only to the MarkIt extension on your device.
- Data is retained until you delete it or uninstall the extension.
- No data is stored on our servers. We operate no servers or databases.
Pro license validation results are cached locally and re-validated with LemonSqueezy every 7 days.
4. Data Sharing and Third Parties
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with any third party, with one exception:
LemonSqueezy (Pro subscribers only): When you enter a Pro license key, the extension sends that key to
LemonSqueezy's license validation API (
https://api.lemonsqueezy.com/v1/licenses/validate) to confirm your subscription is active. LemonSqueezy is our payment processor. No other data is sent. LemonSqueezy's privacy policy is available at
lemonsqueezy.com/privacy.
Free-tier users generate zero network requests. The extension operates entirely offline for non-Pro users.
5. Permissions
The extension requests the following browser permissions:
- storage - to save your highlights and settings locally on your device.
- activeTab - to read and highlight selected text on the page you are currently viewing. Page content is processed locally and never transmitted.
- contextMenus - to add a "Highlight" option to the right-click context menu.
No broad host permissions are requested beyond what is required for content scripts to function on pages you visit.
6. Your Rights and Data Control
You have full control over your data at all times:
- View: All stored highlights are visible within the extension popup and settings page.
- Export: Pro users can export all highlights as JSON or CSV from the Settings page.
- Delete: You can delete individual highlights, all highlights on a specific page, or all highlights entirely from the Settings page.
- Deactivate Pro: You can remove your license key at any time from Settings, which clears all locally stored license data.
- Uninstall: Uninstalling the extension permanently and immediately removes all locally stored data from your device.
7. Children's Privacy
MarkIt does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under 13. Because we collect no personal data, the extension is safe for all ages.
8. Changes to This Policy
If this policy is updated, the revised version will be posted on this page with an updated date. Continued use of the extension after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
